Tribology Frontiers Conference shifts to 2023
Edward P. Salek, CAE, Executive Director | TLT Headquarters Report July 2022
Mark your calendars with the latest on the STLE conference schedule and other tribology events.
In the June TLT, my column told readers that it was not too early for the tribology and lubricants community to think about two major technical events coming in November 2022.
However, that was not the case for one of those events. STLE has announced that the Tribology Frontiers Conference (TFC), which was scheduled for November of this year, has been postponed to Nov. 13-15, 2023. The Cleveland Marriott Downtown at Key Tower in downtown Cleveland, Ohio (USA), will remain the conference location.
When announcing the postponement, STLE cited an exceptionally crowded 2022 conference calendar and COVID-19-related international travel restrictions. Moving into 2023 reduces these issues and provides tribologists from all parts of the world with the possibility of being able to attend the conference.
Since it was founded in 2014, the TFC has gained a reputation for bringing together the tribology research community in a format that maximizes the opportunity to experience the latest in research and network with peers in a relaxed environment. For details, visit

The other previously announced November event remains on track. The second STLE Tribology and Lubrication for E-Mobility Conference will be held Nov. 30-Dec. 1 at Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) in San Antonio, Texas (USA). STLE established this new event in response to the rapid movement of the automotive industry to develop and commercialize electric vehicles (EVs). This trend is placing growing demands on the lubricants that will be required to ensure optimum operation.
The inaugural conference in 2021, also held at SwRI, presented more than 20 speakers from leading companies and organizations with an interest in e-mobility. These speakers provided their unique perspectives on the requirements for lubricants operating in EVs.
The STLE Electric Vehicle Conference Planning Committee issued a call for papers in June. The conference program and other details will be available in late August. The EV event will be presented as an in-person conference but will offer a virtual attendance option for those unable to travel to San Antonio. For details, visit
www.stle.org/EVConference.
Three other noteworthy lubricants and tribology events also are on the calendar. The first of these is the Lubricant Expo, which will be Sept. 6-8 in Messe Essen, Germany. This new exposition aims to bring together the entire lubricant supply chain, its stakeholders and end-user industries. There also will be a three-day conference program with more than 60 expert speakers discussing trends, opportunities and lubrication applications.
The OilDoc Conference & Exhibition is a well-known, trend-setting and established event for lubrication, oil and condition monitoring, maintenance and tribology in Europe. It will be May 9-11, 2023, in Rosenheim, Bavaria. OilDoc is now looking for speakers with interesting case studies, personal expertise and innovative ideas to contribute to the program.
Finally, the Japanese Society of Tribologists is presenting the 9th International Tribology Conference, Fukuoka 2023 (ITC Fukuoka 2023) on Sept. 25-30, 2023, in Fukuoka, Japan. The slogan of ITC Fukuoka 2023 is “Reunite, Invigorate, Create an Inspiring Future,” and the scope covers all areas of science and technology regarding tribology. The conference’s official language is English. The abstract submission will be open in August and continue through the end of 2022.
