STLE’s podcast program will discuss tribology and the movement toward sustainability.

‘Our podcast will start to address a series of technology developments that will demonstrate how tribology and lubrication can promote the movement toward sustainability.’

Podcasts have become more popular over the last decade. According to PodcastHosting.org,1 there are more than two million podcasts and 48 million episodes streaming worldwide. Fifty-five percent of the U.S. population has listened to a podcast. Most people listen to them at home or while driving. I like listening to podcasts at home related to my favorite TV shows. It’s a nice way for me to wind down in the evening. I find them relaxing, along the lines of listening to music. You don’t have to look at a screen—you can just sit, listen and take a break. It’s a good way to reach out to audiences in a new way.

STLE has launched a new, free podcast series titled Perfecting Motion: Tribology and the Quest for Sustainability, hosted by STLE Advisor – Technical Programs and Services and TLT writer Dr. Neil Canter. This will be a monthly series that features recorded interviews with industry experts in the field of tribology and lubrication. In the introductory episode, Canter will discuss how tribology and lubrication can help address the threat of global warming and promote the movement toward sustainability.

“Tribologists are working on new approaches for further reducing friction and wear that will hopefully improve the efficiency of internal combustion engines, leading to a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions and an improvement in sustainability,” says Canter. “Current research seeking to achieve this objective will be covered in future podcasts.”

Canter continues: “As we move into the future, sustainability will play an increasingly important role in influencing how lubricants will be used in the transportation, energy, manufacturing and medical/health sectors.”

The first official episode will include interviews on tribochemistry with STLE Board members Drs. Kuldeep Mistry (The Timken Co.) and Nic Argibay (Sandia National Laboratories). Canter says, “Tribochemistry explores the reactions that can occur between lubricants and surfaces under boundary lubrication conditions where there is little room between the two. Research is ongoing to determine how specific lubricants can react with surfaces under these severe conditions to produce materials, such as diamond-like carbon (DLC), that have the potential to achieve superlubricity where coefficient of friction values are below 0.005.”

You can access the STLE podcasts through www.stle.org, as well as your favorite streaming services such as Apple and Google Podcasts, among others. One great thing about these streaming services is that you can subscribe to STLE’s podcast and get notified when a new episode is released.

Canter says, “Moving forward, our podcast will start to address a series of technology developments that will demonstrate how tribology and lubrication can promote the movement toward sustainability.”

Make sure to check out this great new way of accessing technical content. STLE offers content in a variety of different formats—print, digital, video and now audio.
