What is a Metalworking Fluids Specialist? 

Certified Metalworking Fluids Specialistsare those individuals who have met minimum standards of experience, knowledge and written requirements as established by the STLE Metalworking Fluids Certification Committee to provide technical consultation in the field of metalworking fluid management. Individuals should have a basic knowledge of fluid chemistry, machining processes, metallurgy, tooling filtration and waste treatment.

     

Core Responsibilities

  • Evaluates and selects proper metalworking fluids.
  • Maintains overall responsibility of inventory, equipment management and application/handling of fluids.
  • Involved in research and training of personnel on metalworking fluids.
  • Troubleshoots metalworking fluid issues and facilitates management on areas of metal removal and metal forming.

Requirements

  • Two-year degree in science, manufacturing technology or business; coursework, including general chemistry and biology; as well as 20 hours of training in metalworking fluid applications and management (four-year degree recommended).
  • Three years working in a manufacturing setting; five years working in a lab setting.

Becoming CMFS Certified

CMFS certification is obtained by scoring70 percent or higher on the designated exam that standardizes the body of knowledge for a Certified Metalworking Fluids Specialist. Certification is valid for three years, after which individuals are required to recertify to maintain their CMFS status.
