MODELING THE IMPACT OF LATERAL PUMP VIBRATIONS ON THE DYNAMICS OF MECHANICAL SEALS
This paper extends Green and Etsion’s (1985 and 1986) models and analyses for mechanical seals to include the impact of housing and rotor vibrations, both synchronous parallel vibrations and pitching and yawing motion. Green and Etsion use a moment equation about the mass center for the rotating and nonrotating seal elements – no force equation. The present paper extends the moment equation for the rotating element to include synchronous and nonsynchronous pitching and yawing of the spinning rotor. Force equations are also introduced to account for O-ring reaction forces that arise due to lateral rotor and housing vibration.
