STLE has a wealth of products and services for those who have an interest in or work regularly with these unique substances.
So many STLE members are involved with MWFs—designing them, selling them or advising customers on their save and effective use—that it’s no wonder the society has so many resources targeting this critical market. The society is fortunate to have active and involved committees in this area, including the MWF Technical Committee and the MWF Certification Committee. When designing new products and services, it’s always nice to have the world’s leading authorities in your corner.
Let’s take a look at some MWF-related STLE products and services that can upgrade your technical understanding, advance your career, increase your salary and better serve your employers and customers.
TLT SPECIAL SECTION
More than half the pages in this issue focus on MWFs. We’ve combined a handful of “best of” articles with all-new material to present a wide discourse on the topic. The all-star lineup of writer-experts includes Neil Canter, Fred Passman and Jerry Byers.

EDUCATION COURSES
MWF lovers can choose from two courses offered at this year’s STLE Annual Meeting & Exhibition, May 17-21 at the Coronado Springs Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
Metalworking Fluids 105: Basics of Metal Forming is an updated version of a course introduced two years ago geared toward those who work in manufacturing environments. Topics include lubrication, rancidity/microbiology, foam, water quality, corrosion, contamination and filtration. Much of the material focuses on evaluating and overcoming failure mechanisms.
Metalworking Fluids 125: Basic MWF Health & Safety is a one-day introductory course designed for those new to this technical area. Topics include microbial contamination, additive toxicology, industrial hygiene and mist effects. The course is capped by a mist case study where students solve a real-world MWF problem.
CERTIFICATION
Independent surveys confirm that those who hold STLE certifications command higher salaries and are viewed as more valuable by their employers. You can take exams for any of the society’s four certifications in Lake Buena Vista, including Certified Metalworking Fluid Specialist. This special designation verifies the expertise of those involved with research, evaluation, selection, technical management and handling of MWFs. STLE offers a body of knowledge to help you prepare for this challenging exam.
METALWORKING FLUIDS, SECOND EDITION
Edited by STLE-member Jerry Byers with Milacron Inc. in Cincinnati, this book was considered the technical bible on MWFs when it was released 10 years ago. The second edition updates our understanding of such important issues as the microbiology of MWFs and its impact on employee health, safety and performance. The section on government regulation has been totally rewritten.
